Gingivitis means inflammation of the gums. Bacteria is the common cause. In the form of plaque, bacteria covers your teeth and infects your gums. Gingivitis is less destructive than periodontitis, but if left untreated, gingivitis can progress to become periodontitis.
Causes
The most common cause of gingivitis is bacterial plaque building up on and around your teeth. Your immune system responds to the bacteria and can result in the degradation of your gingival tissue and eventually your teeth. There are other causes like:
- Changes in hormones.
- Cancer, Diabetes, and HIV have been linked to gingivitis.
- Drugs.
- Smoking.
- Family history.
Sign and Symptoms
Gingivitis can be seen in a few symptoms. Inflamed gums are a common sign. The gums can be red or purple and tender to the touch. Ever notice bleeding when you floss? Bad Breath? Receding Gums? These are all signs and symptoms of gingivitis. Keep an eye out for these symptoms. Gingivitis can be taken care of easily if treated early on.
